FailCon: the first night Syria talked about failing
Every ecosystem has a stage for the people who made it. Syria had never had one for the people who did not — until FailCon, the first event in the country dedicated to failure stories, held in Damascus as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2025. Nine founders spoke. Our team organised it.
Why a night about failing
The format is borrowed, and deliberately so. Fuckup Nights has run for years in dozens of countries on a single rule: you do not stand up and talk about the round you raised, you stand up and talk about the thing that went wrong and what it cost. It works because it is the one event format where the useful information is guaranteed to be true. Nobody exaggerates a failure.
Syria had never held one. That is worth saying plainly, because a young ecosystem carries a sharper version of the problem: when there are few enough founders that everybody knows everybody, the cost of admitting a collapse feels enormous — so the lessons stay private, and every new founder pays for them again from scratch. An evening like this is not therapy. It is a shortcut.
Nine people who had actually been there
Nine speakers took the stage, all of them founders and operators who had built inside the Syrian ecosystem rather than commenting on it from somewhere safer. That distinction did more work than any single talk: the failures on offer were local ones with local causes, and the room could check them against its own experience while it listened.

What organising it taught us
Running something is a different job from speaking at it, and what you learn at the back of the room is how much appetite there was. People stayed. People asked the questions they would never ask at a pitch event. The evening ran long because nobody wanted to be the one who ended it.
If there is a case for doing it again — and there is — it is that one night turned a set of expensive private lessons into public ones. For an ecosystem this size, that is a cheap trade.
